CHAPTER 11

"You're sure you can handle this?"

Jason nodded at me. "Go."

I cast one last quick glance around the store. Dwight, Dar, Yuki, and Shea were there again helping out. Jason had hired two more people to help with the evening shift. Josie had hired another two to help in the coffee shop. Things were as good as they were going to get, but I still felt like crap leaving them to face the hordes of holiday shoppers. Those people were insane.

I'd spent all of thirty minutes working in the store before almost getting into two fist fights and setting a large woman with a chicken-butt haircut ablaze. She had stomped up to the register demanding to speak to the manager. I one-upped her and introduced myself as the owner. Things went south from there and Jason actually had to step between us just as the words to my spell were tantalizingly wetting my lips.

It was after that altercation that Jason politely suggested I do some retail therapy to blow off some steam. "Okay, but call me if you need me."

"If we are attacked by an army of trolls, your services will be needed. You can't incinerate the customers, Dot. Even if you own the place," he whispered and pleaded with his eyes.

"She wanted to use a Barnes & Noble gift card. At my store. What was I supposed to do?"

"Offer her a discount on her purchase after politely explaining why we can't accept our competitors' gift cards. She was confused between coupons and them. I gave her a ten percent markdown for her misunderstanding, and she was happy with that."

"I'da been happy if she was charcoal."

"She spent three hundred dollars, just to save enough at our store to match the balance of her gift card. You made out like a bandit. That's what I call a win."

"Reducing your enemies to ash is a win. Giving her a discount is a peace treaty at best and still feels like surrendering to me."

He sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. I needed to get out of there before he quit. "Dot…"

"I know. This is why you're the boss, and I just sign the checks." I leaned in and gave him a quick kiss. "You win. You're much better at this than I am. I'm going Yule shopping." I grabbed my purse out of the drawer in my desk and headed for the office door.

"You taking anybody with you?"

"Nope. You need them more than I do."

"But…"

"No buts. I'll be fine. Nice crowded mall."

"We don't have a mall."

"But Amersville does."

"Well, I don't think anybody wants to kill you in the neighboring town, so I'll keep your familiars."

"If they give you shit, tell them if I have a problem, they'll be the first to know. I'm not helpless."

He cocked an eyebrow at me and gave me the look.

"At defending myself."

"As long as it's not from customers, I'll agree with you."

"Not gonna let that go, are you?"

"Nope. Be safe."

"You, too."

I headed out the door and waved at everybody as I passed them walking toward the front door.
